The WORLD FAMILY TREE DAY

People of all ages, cultures, and walks of life are invited to gather under trees around the world with family, friends, and other community members to affirm a global vision of unity-in-diversity. We all belong to one world family of humankind. During these times of Covid-19 and variants you are encouraged to get vaccinated, practice Social Distancing and wear a mask where needed - but you can still HUG A TREE :-)

In that spirit, you are encouraged to explore your ancestry and your connectedness to all others on the planet by DNA testing and by building a family tree.

This global celebration and participatory event of one world family under one symbolic tree of life, pays tribute to our collective home, the Earth. The use of a symbolic "Tree of Life" or "World Tree" has been consistently represented in most ancient myths and cultures around the world.

Many hundreds of years ago, after generations of bloodshed, five warring tribes were moved to unite in peace. They buried their weapons under a great tree.

An opportunity arises to reclaim that vision around the world.

A giant sequoia, the largest living tree on our planet, calls to us. It is currently and appropriately named after a war hero, General Sherman. There is a dream to unite around trees all over the world, and to bury our prejudices and hatred.

The tree invites everyone: warriors and peacemakers; victims and aggressors; children and elders; the indifferent and the passionate, enemies and friends. Under the shade of this tree we are all equal. It has seen our ancestors come and go, and it will be here when we are gone.

The dream is that today's children will live to see this tree, all the trees, in peace.

In 1996, the last Sunday in August was chosen for the annual WORLD FAMILY TREE DAY event in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, August 28, 1963. We are seeking an NGO to help make “WORLD FAMILY TREE DAY” an official United Nations World Day.
